Debbie looked around, straightened the curtains, made the bed and fluffed up the small rug by the dresser. She blew the dust off the top of everything on her computer desk and put her schoolbooks away in her backpack. She smiled, clapped her hands in approval and opened the door.

She came out of her room holding a black garbage bag full of one pair of sandles and a mauve jersey top and some tissues smudged with Cardinal Red lipstick. She walked past her mother holding the bag out as if it held a dead cat and tossed it into the dumpster.

She bounced on bare feet back into the house.
