Generations of Smithfields had lived on the farm. There was always a grandma and grandpa to visit for large holiday dinners. There was always a place to get rid of the kids for a week or two during the summer.

But Addie was the last left living alone after Homer died. The kids' kids had spread out and settled from one side of the country to another and rarely stopped in the midwest any more.
