{"id":349,"date":"2007-12-04T07:33:07","date_gmt":"2007-12-04T14:33:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/susangibb.net\/blog2\/?p=349"},"modified":"2009-02-02T22:56:25","modified_gmt":"2009-02-03T03:56:25","slug":"storyspace-character-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/susangibb.net\/blog2\/2007\/12\/storyspace-character-development\/","title":{"rendered":"STORYSPACE: Character Development"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"drop\">G<\/span>oing back to Steve&#8217;s posting last night regarding the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steveersinghaus.com\/archives\/1029\">knowledge of character<\/a> as influenced by environment, I agree completely that Storyspace, by its technical aspects of Writing Spaces and Mapping does bring an opportunity to develop characters in a different manner than traditional writing style.<\/p>\n<p>What Steve terms as knowledge I might call faceting as well (why does <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Watchmen-Alan-Moore\/dp\/0930289234\/ref=pd_bbs_2?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1196770588&amp;sr=1-2\">Watchmen<\/a><\/em> come to mind?).\u00a0 Visually, the Writing Spaces are acting as windows, or a &#8220;tell me everything about yourself in thirty seconds&#8221; to the writer.\u00a0 They are answers to the &#8220;oh, that&#8217;s why he did that,&#8221; about a character.\u00a0 They form natural breaks of paragraph and thought, often encouraging another window to open, just as often pulling the shade down as a conclusion to a question.\u00a0 The writer is being encouraged to question any sequence of the narrative as it unfolds.\u00a0 He can then share what he learns via a loop or thread of Writing Spaces.<\/p>\n<p>The Spaces also influence the pacing of story.\u00a0 Just as short sentences increases dramatic action, the spaces allow a rat-a-tat-tat of information or a slow revelation of a hidden spirit.<\/p>\n<p>In the manner of a new acquaintance, we find out bits and pieces of our characters by their thoughts, their actions, enclosed in separate boxes that are ever-ready to hold this secret or that.<\/p>\n<p><a onclick=\"window.open(this.href, '_blank', 'width=640,height=517,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false\" href=\"http:\/\/smgct.typepad.com\/.shared\/image.html?\/photos\/uncategorized\/2007\/12\/04\/image_writng_spaces.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-724\" title=\"230407ssp\" src=\"https:\/\/susangibb.net\/blog2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/230407ssp.jpg\" alt=\"230407ssp\" width=\"480\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/susangibb.net\/blog2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/230407ssp.jpg 480w, https:\/\/susangibb.net\/blog2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/230407ssp-300x241.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"drop\">G<\/span>oing back to Steve&#8217;s posting last night regarding the knowledge of character as influenced by environment, I agree completely that Storyspace, by its technical aspects of Writing Spaces and Mapping does bring an opportunity to develop characters in a different manner than traditional writing style.
