It was at the cabin she\u2019d taken over after her father had died where they had their worst argument yet.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy are they called Endless Mountains,\u201d he said, \u201cwhen there\u2019s obviously a beginning and end. Don\u2019t even stretch across a couple of states. It\u2019s all here in podunk Pennsylvania.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know why. But that\u2019s the name,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cReal creative, these folks in the outback.\u201d<\/p>\n

She grit her teeth. This vacation was supposed to bring them some peace. Some common ground. He\u2019d never been up here. As long as they\u2019d been married, it was impossible to have him and her family in the same town. The cabin for even a weekend would have been fatal to somebody, surely.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going out for a walk,\u201d he said after breakfast.<\/p>\n

\u201cWait, I\u2019ll come with you,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just going down to that lake we passed somewhere on the way here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut that\u2019s a mile or more away,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s easy to get lost, even the road forks off in some places. If you wait while I find my boots I\u2019ll come along.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t be ridiculous,\u201d he said. \u201cThe lake isn\u2019t that far by a long shot.\u201d He was a city boy, used to measuring distance by blocks. He just wanted to get away from her and the three rooms of the cabin. He just wanted to get away.<\/p>\n

She held her breath to keep in what she was ready to say. She let it out slowly. \u201cFollow the ridge,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, right. Like you know your way around here.\u201d<\/p>\n

And they argued again about the name, \u201cEndless Mountains.\u201d She finally gave up and said he was right. He left with a smugness she hated and let him go out the door, knowing he might walk from one end of the state to another but he\u2019d never, ever, find his way back.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
