With one hand on the wheel and one holding up the directions which he squints to read, Jack Maloney drives cautiously through the downtown area reading signs, counting lights, and watching out for pedestrian traffic. It is 11:05 and he has an important job interview at 11:45.
He's been out of work just a couple of months. He never thought it would be this hard to find another job. Money was getting tight but the main concern now was to get good insurance coverage. His youngest son has been diagnosed with a nerve disorder that they still haven't been able to completely control.
He worries that he might have missed the street and wills himself to stop sweating.
