In class discussion today of this short story of a young girl trapped by a volcanic landslide and a reporter who stays three days by her side, there was one of those moments when the lightbulb glows above your head from revelation. A. stated that he felt a connection between the characters in this story and Mishima’s Patriotism, and as he gave us his thoughts, additional ones relating to what he was saying exploded in my head. Like a tennis match the ball of ideas flew back and forth, and with each lob a point was made. S. adds in her insight, and she seems to see things spiritually and simple yet complex–a whole new slant. J. is more practical, accepting of life, and I almost sense a fellow conservative streak. This process is exciting. Although solitary reading that leads to discovery lends much to the enjoyment and satisfaction of any story and does feel good, wouldn’t it be great to always have the opportunity to discuss some of these more intense stories with someone else who’s just read them as well!

Spinning writes about the importance of sharing ideas in a group. The richness of the experience of story is indeed made that much more powerful by sharing ideas and testing them. This is foundational to college which, in my mind,…
