WRITING & CURRENT AFFAIRS: Politics

Yes, I know that more than anyone I wanted to keep politics out of this column. But it’s a primary part of current events and current events shape literature. I believe that while I will still manage to avoid much political discussion here in Spinning, I may not be able to avoid keeping it out of my writing ventures. I’m thinking of a politically-based short story, or maybe even a novel that’s forming in my head.

Politics and fiction—what a natural combination after all.

Some argue that everything is political. Trying to keep politics out of our writing is dishonest and inauthentic.

I don’t feel that politics are a necessary element in every story, but a character’s personality is closely aligned with his or her political views I suppose, and in that way, yes, it would be evident in our writing about that character or situation. Our own personality/politics will undoubtedly color the story as well. Damned messy dilemma.
