This morning I shall visit my father, and we will talk about the death of Ronald Reagan in all its personal relevance: “If they couldn’t cure Reagan’s Alzheimer’s, they couldn’t help Mom,” “Do you remember him in that movie about the cowboys who…?” “Star wars,” “He was born in 1911, just like me.”
My Dad’s a Democrat. He and my Mom seemed unfazed by Clinton’s indiscretions while I ranted that (tolerance and understanding of human nature aside) out of a couple hundred million Americans I’d have thought we could find someone who hadn’t broken three Commandments in one fell swoop. My Dad is more and more depressed about world events and what people like the terrorists could be thinking of, much less that they exist. I understand passion, even when I believe it to be totally misguided and flat out wrong.
But I am puzzled and worried by what I see on weblogs in particular brought out by Reagan’s death. Extreme liberals who cheer and jeer in total hatred of a man who tried his best to do something good for his country, right or wrong. This is love of your fellowman? Some of these people are truly vicious, truly ready to have shot the man had they the opportunity. And scary; these people are Americans.
I hope your visit with Dad is a walk down memory lane with good lights shining NOT dim shadows of scary times. People in this world sometimes project their hate… I think it is because they are fearful and insecure. hummm…could be the sign of recent horrors and detours. Sad that Pres. Reagan could not have given some of his wisdom/humor/love to the world these past few years. I am grateful “we” had him at all.
Vicious liberals. Vicious conservatives. I think the political wavelength is the wrong one to tune in to.
Although Reagan’s death is sad, the media has exposed a part of our nations history to the young and naive. Whether the media is bias or not, a collective history of a past leader still helps to solve the enigma of politics for many Americans. Liberals and conservatives need to apply history as a lesson plan not a weapon.
