I’m satisfied at least, with the track I am on in my writing fiction, but need to keep on top of it–especially when I see the progress (despite rejections) made in this past semester alone. I’ll need, I would think, to establish some form of schedule, classroom-style, to keep it up and go beyond it. Reading will help, and maybe even self-issued assignments with deadlines that I respond to so well. If, of course, I can be tough on myself and assign the work in the first place. That’ll be the hard part.
But there’s something that’s still bothering me, and it’s a growing irritant rather than being overcome. Poetry. I really, really, really want to learn how to write poetry, and evidently, mine sucks. That may be the next course to consider come Fall.
define “sucks” ???
as in, it is not satisfactory to YOU? If, by saying that it sucks, you mean that some external source has come to that conclusion, then discard the idea altogether and try reading your poetry again minus the filter of someone else’s opinion
I could be wrong, but I believe poetry is to written for the person writing it, not for the reader … as long as the words spill out of you, they are perfectly aligned … they carry with them the essence of beauty, enlightenment, pain, or whatever it is that needed to be said
in other words, your poetry doesn’t suck
in my humble opinion (closes door on the way out)
You now know that all writing takes practice. I don’t know if college courses are the first solution for you now.
Do you have poetry to write?
