WRITING: Simultaneous Submissions

I realize I may have bespoken in defense of keeping the knowledge of simultaneous submissions to oneself, but in my current frame of mind I had an attack of honesty.  Sent in two stories that were out on the circuit to a lit journal that always accepted them (or so I thought, perhaps it was just for the contests).  In checking this morning as to what I had sent them online, and what the deadlines were, I noticed they did not accept simultaneous for their standard reading.  I am impulsive, and so, sent out this e-mail message to them:

Subject: Uh-oh.

I’m truly sorry, but I just noticed today that for the standard submission you do not accept simultaneous sumission–for some reason I didn’t check that again when I sent them in in April.  The following two stories were entered and you may wish to pull them from consideration since they are both still out to a couple of other lit journals.  I can resubmit them in July.  They are:

I just received this reply:

"Okay. I’ll reject them both sight unseen. Thanks for speaking up, Susan. I appreciate it. We’ll look forward to July!"

As a writer, I just put myself several months behind.  But the satistfaction in knowing I did the right thing should overwhelm that.

Soon, I hope.
