Never really noticed before, the daily quotation on my home page. But today’s made me pause:
That’s what it takes to be a hero, a little gem of innocence inside you that makes you want to believe that there still exists a right and wrong, that decency will somehow triumph in the end.
– Lise Hand, describing Irish journalist Veronica Guerin, who was killed as a result of her investigations of Irish organized crime.
That gem is tough and hard, a diamond cut into many facets that direct the glow in all directions, yet also presents a hard flat surface to anything that dares to mark its bloom.
This, then, is what my father tried to tell me that I resisted for so long. The passing years can, more easily than any other natural occurence of earth, can penetrate the diamond in our mind.
There does exist a right and wrong. The balance though has shifted in the popular opinion.
