LITERATURE & WRITING: Direction

Sort of light on the posting here today but that’s because I’m busy sulking.

On the lit front, I’m trying to pick out something to read even while I’m continuing O’Brien (now that I’ve finished Barthes’ Pleasure of the Text, O’Brien’s a piece of cake!).  Considered settling in with McCarthy’s The Road since it’s the Oprah pick, but though I’m really interested in watching the planned interview on her show, I really don’t need to hear the opinions of the book until after I’ve read it myself anyway, and I’m likely slower than the reading time they allow their members.  Obviously I don’t want a difficult read while I’m still on At Swim-Two-Birds, (and a couple others–non-fiction–I’m still going through), but I’m in the mood for something really, really good and I’m going to have to study the bookcase for a while before I select.

On the writing end, I was in a mood to throw in the towel this morning but a word from a friend may have set me back in the right direction.  Though I think I need a bit more time to pout before I’m over the black mood.

Oh don’t sulk. Or if you must, channel the angst into a clever line like I heard on the TV show “Shark.”

“Just when I think I’ve hit rock bottom, another step is removed from the celestial ladder.”

    Great writing on that show.

But I’m adorable when I sulk.

Yeah, I like Shark. It’s fast-paced and shows a bit of the uncaring side of the legal profession that I find so endearing right now.

It is a few days since you mentioned the road, so you’re probably off on your next reading adventure, but I thought I’d just say that The Road is not a difficult read, not in the sense of a complex text anyway. It is very very good, the only difficulty with it being that one or two of the scenes are a bit rough for those of a gentle disposition.

Oh I love McCarthy and didn’t get too squeamish at the “baby tree” in Blood Meridian so I’m really looking forward to it. Plus I’m still going on At Swim-Two-Birds too.

I just haven’t been able to read, write, or think this past week (see today’s post) but should be getting back to normal in a few days.

    Thanks!
