Figured that something like Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House would put me in the right frame of mind for facing the monsters of Silent Hill again. It’s been a while since I dealt with anything scary–aside from the lawyers of course. McCarthy’s characters don’t frighten me; they intrigue.
It’s also relatively short so I’ve also pulled Sinclair Lewis’ Babbit off the shelf as a ready backup.

I really like Haunting of Hill House. The opening is so well done…sets tone, mood and is downright creepy.
I didn’t like her We’ve Always Lived in the Castle as much, but it’s well written. It’s short. And nobody does creepy psychological fare like Jackson!
I’m lovin’ it already. The writing style stands out with so many excellent skills of language use and strategy. Might try WALC after this, just to study the writing.
