Little by little the story comes out. In a prior post about elections I mentioned a town vote on an existing airport. Well, with only days to go prior to the voting, we’re finding out more and more about what is involved. For one thing, a study that we’re supposed to vote yes on—which made a lot of sense to me as it was presented as costing $650—actually has been done already but evidently without the results that are important to those who want it done. At a real cost of $100,000. Secondly, the owner of the property would be given only $3million (don’t feel too badly, he only paid $1million for it six years ago) under the rights of eminent domain. Third, once it’s established as an airport, it can grow to include jetliners if someone is so inclined. Fourth, there are four nearby airports already. Fifth, the town—meaning us, the taxpayers—would be responsible and liable (as an EMT, I had been out to the airport three times for crashes). Sixth, the possibility of income to the town—small businesses, the kind of big-spenders who fly into little podunk towns—is really a promise out of fantasyland. The only business that would survive besides the small diner would be a car rental service.
I’m voting No and No.
