BLOGGING: Critique

Well, I suppose I should just get this over with.

In my fragile writer ego’s never-ending quest for validation, Spinning was submitted to The Weblog Review, and the results came in last night. Three people reviewed the log over many days, and from what I can see by going back over the stats pages, as a group they put in an awful lot of time to come up with what I believe is a thoroughly researched and honest review, and I thank them for their professionalism. Scores were 3.5/5, 4/5 and 5/5.

Design-wise, Spinning didn’t do too well, and I believe they made excellent suggestions which has led to at least this one minor color change this morning in the posting body of the page. Content-wise, I was happy to see that two reviewers enjoyed reading the weblog and had very nice words for the writing. One reviewer did not, and I admit to being temporarily crushed until I took the time to both check out what blogs he had reviewed and assigned high marks to, and his own blog. No argument here–he was being honest and I can see that Spinning would not be his cup of tea.

My only suggestion would be that The Weblog Review expand its categories a bit, as there is a large majority of very different blogs under the heading of Personal. And, the only issue I have with the results is that I do not see the need for one of the reviewers to have put further remarks about Spinning on his personal weblog—but then again, it’s his space on the internet and freedom of speech thankfully is still a right.

Check out The Weblog Review’s comments on Spinning, if you like, and the rest of their website. It has plenty of information on blogging, is an excellent source of finding links to good weblogs, and their review offers many thoughtful suggestions.

That’s one heck of a review if I’ve ever seen one. And I have’nt seen anyone who would deserve it more. Congratulations.

Thanks, Neha, you know that means a lot to me.

Eliza, no of course I don’t mind, and greatly appreciate it. Guess I was just still uncrumpling this morning when I spotted a remark elsewhere that made me look even more boring! Thanks for your valuable insight and kind words.

They struck me as mostly positive, with some quibbling over style and design. Personally I don’t think writing really has much to do about design, but maybe that’s because I don’t know anything about it.

As for style, and more specifically how formal it should seem, that’s usually a personal taste thing. More people would probably like your style as opposed to mine. Inaccessible to some, apparently, but probably not most. In writing, that’s about as good as you can ever hope to expect.
