LITERATURE: Bad Writing

Some of you may be aware of the The Bulwer-Lytton Website, “Where WWW means Wretched Writers Welcome” and their annual Fiction Contest which celebrates the worst opening sentence of a story. I came across it and found it hilarious, especially the examples in Sticks and Stones, and was prompted to order at least two of the paperback editions of prior winning words, It Was A Dark and Stormy Night and one of the later editions, bypassing Son of a Dark and Stormy Night and Bride of a Dark and Stormy Night.

Even the best of us are capable of writing the worst. And in reading the worst, it becomes more obvious so that maybe we can catch some of these bloopers in our own writing. Okay, so I found several of them uncomfortably close to some of what I know I’ve written. Anyway, it’s a brief but fun read and I’m looking forward to getting the compilations.
