REALITY?: People

I’m taking a brief break from my real job to write down some thoughts about little things that happened today that made it more than just a day.

This morning I saw the eagle sitting on his usual tree overlooking the brook. That’s always special, even when it becomes a daily thing. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to the majesty in his self-confident stance, his focus on his survival, patiently waiting for something to swim by beneath him, a trout unaware of his own part in the glory. I didn’t stop. I never do; we don’t want to discourage them from nesting in this spot they’ve chosen for several years now. But I smiled for many miles as I drove further on my journey, strangely content and stronger in spirit.

I stole some time from my work to see a friend. She hasn’t been feeling well lately, and the battle’s just begun. I brought chicken soup in case she couldn’t eat, and lasagne in case she could. She was feeling a lot better this morning, after a horrible doctor-infested day yesterday. She looked beautiful. We talked and silently confirmed promises we’ve made each other long ago.

When I got back to the shop, a customer was waiting patiently, and I apologized for running late–I didn’t tell her why. The grin on her face as she spotted her 5-year old’s crayon, glue and glitter refrigerator drawing all framed up forgave me my tardiness, and gave me more to smile about.

It’s been a good day. I’ve seen several eagles today.
