STORIES: Carol and Me

“That’s neither here nor there,” my grandma used to say. For everything from politics to what she served us all for dinner, she’d use it at the strategic point she cleverly could spot when she knew she was on the losing side of any argument. “That’s neither here nor there.” But I can’t remember ever hearing her mean it about a person. Like when grandpa would be missing for a few nights and we would ask her where he was because she never seemed concerned as if she knew and it was fine by her. She never said, “He’s neither here nor there.” But that’s precisely where I feel I am right now.
